A NEW two-way wireless communication system is set to revolutionise search and rescue operations in underground coal mines, according to industry professionals.

CSIRO has introduced new technology allowing miners working underground to communicate via radio text messages which are able to travel through rock strata.

According to the company, its existing personal emergency device (PED) technology is now used within 95% of Australian underground coal mines, and is continuing to post success.

The new system builds on existing communications systems by enabling two-way through-the-earth communication. It features a small 32 character display screen equipped with a pager functionality allowing miners to ask for information, report their condition and location, and guide rescuers in emergencies.

The device is also expected to improve productivity by providing a reliable communication channel during everyday operations.

CSIRO has signed a ten-year licensing deal with Mine Site Technologies for commercialisation of the technology, which is expected to enter production by mid-2009.
