BHP Billiton has issued notebooks to geologists working in central Queensland to collect on-site data and record drilling results in its coal mines.

According to the company, each geologist works with drilling teams who complete boreholes to determine if there are viable coal seams suitable for mining.

The teams have been issued with Toughbook CF-18 notebooks that are said to be ruggedized and dust-proofed to withstand the harsh climate.

BHP says the notebooks are essential to ensure information is logged correctly and no data is lost.

Data was previously logged on paper and transferred to an electronic format. According to the company, entering the information was an additional time-consuming step which was prone to errors.

The notebooks feature an in-vehicle charger and carry an additional battery as a backup. They also feature a magnesium alloy case which is sealed for dust and water protection.
