RIO Tinto says production at its Clermont Mine is on track to commence in 2010 despite bleak economic conditions.
Clermont Mine general manager Dave Lamb says the site is starting to look like an open-cut mine with the box cut beginning to take shape as the team removes large volumes of overburden to uncover the coal.
The miner says that earthworks started in 2008. Lamb says 16 million cubic metres of material have been removed so far.
The Clermont community says the development will be good for the area as coal mines across Central Queensland have been cutting jobs as the global economic downturn takes its toll on demand.
