Queensland questions future of coal

A REVIEW of Queensland’s climate change strategy is questioning the future of coal in electricity generation.

The review questions conditions attached to government approvals of coal-fired generation plants.

Recent environmental reports reveal Queensland emits nearly 160Mt of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, which accounts for a third of the nation’s emissions.

Experts say the review could result in requirements for clean-coal technology to be in place before coal-fired plants are approved in the state.
