Queensland mining town commemorates coal miners

A REMOTE coal mining town in Queensland will hold a service to commemorate miners who have lost their lives on its coalfields.

Collinsville, located 270km north west of Mackay, hosts the service each year on 13 October to remember miners who have died at its coal mines.

Seven miners died in a mining tragedy in 1954, which marked the worst coal mining accident in Queensland since the 1921 Mount Mulligan disaster.

The town was also rocked by an underground explosion at Box Flat in 1972.

Mines and Energy Minister, Geoff Wilson, says the service provides an opportunity to reflect on what can happen if mines are not vigilant about protecting the safety and health of mine workers.
