Queensland coal miner probes coal-to-liquids technology

NEW Hope is investigating a coal-to-liquids project in Queensland that could see the company commercialise its resources without infrastructure constraints.

Coal-to-liquids systems transform coal into combustible gas for power generation or as feedstock for synthetic crude, diesel, gasoline or jet fuel.

The coal miner is investigating the potential for a project at its New Acland mine in the Darling Downs, which would mean coal would not have to be exported.

According to the company, the technology would minimise infrastructure issues related to rail and port transportation.

The New Acland coal mine has been in the testing phase for the past twelve months, with preliminary trials expected to be completed later in 2008.
