Penny tells us what’s ‘wong’ with delaying CPRS

FEDERAL Climate Change Minister, Penny Wong says that the delays to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) are not in Australia’s interest.

The government on Wednesday outlined changes to its CPRS, including a 12 month delay of its introduction to mid-2011.

Wong says that legislation should be passed this year to ensure business certainty.

Quoting Katie Lahey from the BCA, Wong claims that dragging on the debate whilst the global financial crisis is in place, for some businesses could be “the straw that breaks the camel’s back”.

Additionally, the Minister says that without parliamentary approval for the revised emissions trading scheme (ETS), Australia will not be able to argue for an agreement at global climate change talks in Copenhagen in late-2009. She says that Australia, like other nations, had to front up to Copenhagen for the first and best chance to build an effective agreement on climate change action.
