OZ falls behind in clean coal innovation

PATENT Attorneys Griffith Hack claims Australia is not inventing enough clean coal technology to stay internationally competitive.

Industry officials claims that foreign oil companies filed a majority of the clean coal patent applications in Australia over the past five years, despite coal being the nation’s largest export.

In an analysis of about 120 coal combustion, coal conversion and carbon dioxide capture technology patents filed in Australia between 2003 and 2008, only 10 were from domestic companies.

Adelaide-based GTL Energy was the only Australian company to have a portfolio of patents, submitting three on ways to improve conventional coal combustion.
