Origin and Conoco set on joint business venture

CONOCOPHILLIPS and Origin Energy are planning to create a natural gas business focusing on coal bed methane and liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing.

The $8b initiative will target LNG to Asian markets, with ConocoPhillips leading the marketing venture for the first ten years.

The initiative will involve coal bed methane development, operated by Origin Energy, and a liquefied natural gas project, operated by ConocoPhillips.

Conoco will cough up $4.8b to take a 50% stake in the venture to build two liquefied natural gas production facilities in Queensland.

The transaction is subject to approval from Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Board.
