NSW farmer takes coal mining concerns to Parliament

A FARMER making a stand against coal mining on his land on the Liverpool Plains in NSW has taken his battle to Parliament House.

Tim Duddy has blockaded his farm to stop BHP Billiton from exploring on his land. It is estimated half a billion tonnes of coal is stored underground, which could be mined for up to 60 years.

Farmers are calling upon the federal government to conduct an independent study of the impact of longwall coal mining on the region’s groundwater resources.

Duddy is pushing for processes to be reformed so that water will be considered in the future. He is currently amid discussions about changes to government legislation to amend the Water Act.
