New methods for estimating coal mining emissions

THE INTER-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is proposing the use of a new approach to estimate fugitive emissions from open cut coal mines.

The emissions factor (EF) approach estimates mine specific emission rates using gas content from boreholes drilled ahead of mining.

CSIRO is joining with the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) [www.acarp.com.au]to develop the estimation method.

The proposed process is based on data collected in the in situ stages of mining, and assumes gas resources measured in pre-mining stages will be subsequently emitted.

Currently, Australia uses methods based on plume tracking which were formulated by CSIRO in the 1990’s.
