BHP Billiton has announced that the New South Wales Government has approved the expansion of the Mt Arthur coal mine.

The expansion will increase the mine’s production of saleable thermal coal from 11.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to approximately 15 mtpa (run-of-mine coal production increasing to 20 mtpa).

The company says that the project is expected to commence operation in the first half of calendar year 2011.

BHP Billiton President Energy Coal says that the approval demonstrates the group’s commitment to expanding its thermal coal business in the region. He says that the expansion is not only a great next step in the mine's development but is will also create a further 190 jobs in the area.
