FIFTY full-time staff will be sent packing from Rio Tinto’s Kestral coal mine in Queensland as the company cuts its output by 15%.
According to the company, the cuts are a direct response to the global financial crisis and follow low demand from steel makers.
Staff will be advised by 16 January 2009, with redundancies to start later in the month.
Rio says there will be no impact on permanent employees and claims a new arrangement is in place until sales improve.
According to the company, extensions of the Kestral mine will go ahead as usual, which is expected to create 250 jobs when it is complete in 2012.
