Mining men found to play abusive mind games with their women

THE QUEENSLAND Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research (CDFVR) says women partnered to a man working in the mining industry, but not necessarily a miner, is more likely to experience abuse.

In 2007, the researchers surveyed 532 women over the phone that lived in the Bowen Basin and the Mackay region.

The results showed women partnered with a man working in the mining industry were 1.8 times as likely to experience social-psychological abuse.

Social-psychological abuse is a form of abuse characterised by extreme jealously and aimed at controlling a woman's social interactions and behaviour.

While the report found that women partnered to men in the mining industry also experienced other forms of abuse, social-psychological abuse was identified to be significantly correlated with the mining industry.
