Mining Act amended for Moolarben coalmine

THE NSW parliament has amended the Mining Act to allow Felix Resources to start building a thermal coalmine without interference from Xstrata.

The “extraordinary step” will allow Felix to commence construction of its $405m Moolarben coalmine, which holds about 406Mt in coal resources.

The bill overrides a recent ruling in favour of Xstrata that challenged Felix’s mining leases near Mudgee.

The Moolarben Coal Project (MCP) is located approximately 40kms north-east of Mudgee, covering an area of about 11,000Ha.
