Long wall coal mining won’t impact Sydney water supply

THE NEW South Wales Planning Minister Kristina Keneally’s decision to allow Peabody Energy to conduct long wall coal mining underneath Woronora Dam has caused controversy.

The New South Wales Opposition says there is a real risk that the dam floor will crack under the strain of the mining operation.

But the department's director of major assessments, David Kitto, says there is very little chance mining will impact Sydney's water supply.

Kitto says that if in the unlikely event any impact does occur to the supply then one, the company would be in non-compliance, and two, it would have to either change its mine plan to ensure compliance, and if that's not possible then it wouldn't be allowed to mine any more.
