Leighton secures $350m contract for work on Mongolian coal mine

LEIGHTON Asia has secured a $350m, six year mining contract with Energy Resources for the Ukhaakhudag coal mine project in Mongolia.

The company is currently working on site at Ukhaakhudag undertaking the initial mine development works and has established a mining team at the site that will commence the mining contract in March 2009.

The contract works includes the removal of overburden and mining of the coal, plus provision of mining planning and engineering services.

Hamish Tyrwhitt, managing director of Leighton Asia says the company has developed a strong relationship with Energy Resources through working together on the development of the mine at Ukhaakhudag. He says the contract contributes significantly towards Leighton’s objective of becoming a global mining contractor.
