THE NORTHERN Territory Government says the INPEX and Total gas processing facility project will help secure jobs, but how about the many coal miners that will be displaced around Australia as the trend continues?
The project is expected to employ up to 2000 people at the peak of construction and create about 300 new, ongoing jobs.
The facility will process gas and store the LNG onshore for export. The government claims the project will be a major driver for growth in the Darwin region.
The State Government claims the impact of a project of this scale can not be underestimated. It will be the largest single private sector investment in Australia’s history.
The government says LNG is a cleaner alternative to coal at a time when the biggest environmental issue facing the planet is greenhouse gas emissions. Industry officials are speculating on the future of the coal industry in the face of the Federal Government’s carbon reduction scheme, the global economic crisis and the growing popularity of LNG.
With LNG’s carbon footprint over its lifecycle being about 40% less than that of coal, the coal mining and coal-based power generation industries are set to suffer further scrutiny.
