ETS slammed at mining conference

THE NSW Minerals Council is holding a two-day conference at the Novotel Northbeach, Wollongong to discuss the impact of the planned Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

The event is being held on 14 September 2009 and will highlight the predicted loss of regional jobs as a result of the Federal Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.

Minerals Council chief executive Nikki Williams says regional areas face economic devastation if Australia moves alone into the "deepest and darkest uncharted waters" of emissions trading.

Williams says funds should instead be spent on research into new technology such as clean coal.
