Environmentalists question mining in Hunter

ENVIRONMENTALISTS in NSW’s Hunter Valley have voiced concern over the region’s farming sector as coal mining powers full-steam ahead.

An upper Hunter environmentalist told a climate change forum in Newcastle on 8 October 2008 that the region’s farming sector is being overlooked due to the money being generated by mining.

Activists claim too much farmland is being lost to mining and believe coal operations will contribute to global warming.

Environmentalists are calling on the government to stop approving new mines to save the future of agriculture in the area, which is dominated by farming.

Government representatives told the forum there are no plans to cut coal production to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
