Coal mining union challenges Xstrata job cuts

A COAL mining union has expressed concerns over the welfare and job security of workers at Xstrata’s Oaky Creek mine in central Queensland.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) is continuing talks with the Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) and Xstrata about 230 jobs being cut from the mine near Tieri, west of Rockhampton.

Xstrata announced it will lay off 40 permanent staff and 190 contractors in December 2008 after opting to close the mine due to a slump in coking coal demand.

Private talks were held in the IRC in December 2008, with both parties agreeing to return in the New Year.

The CFMEU is asking the Commission to delay the release of redundancy notices, which are due on 09 January 2009.

The union is also concerned there could be more job losses from the site, as the number of job cuts has not yet been confirmed.
