Coal miners told to catch some rays

QUEENSLAND’S Norwich Park Mine has told hundreds of workers to take leave in June 2009.

Mine owner BMA says the coal mine will shut for a month and stand down workers because of declining production.

The mining company says that about 25% of Norwich Park staff will stay at work during the shutdown.

Steve Pierce from the Construction, Forestry, Mining, Energy Union says the mine’s production fell sharply in May and it will continue slide even further in June. He fears the shutdown will not guarantee long-term job security.

However, the Isaac Regional Mayor Cedric Marshall says he is comfortable with BMA's decision and it is unlikely to have a significant impact in the area.

Similarly, chief executive of the Queensland Resources Council Michael Roche says the temporary closure will save jobs.
