BHP Billiton results expected to reveal a recovery in coal

INDUSTRY officials expect BHP Billiton’s June quarter production report to reveal a recovery in Australian coal exports.

The speculation has been spurred by an improving global steel output which would boost demand for metallurgical coal. Manganese and metallurgical coal are both used in the steel-making process.

UBS says that it expects BHP to report production numbers ahead of guidance for manganese and metallurgical coal.

ABN AMRO resources analyst Warren Edney agrees, suggesting that China's increased appetite for imported iron ore, partly driven by the closure of high cost mines in China, has caused the recovery.
