THE Queensland Resources Council has congratulated the state government on adopting a balanced domestic gas supply policy aimed at meeting the needs of both gas producers and users.

"The government's decision to reserve areas of land for future domestic gas production if needed represents a significant boost in realising maximum benefit from the state's world class coal seam gas reserves," QRC Chief Executive Michael Roche said.

"Development of the export liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry is a major new chapter in Queensland's economic history and an integral part of its future as one of the world's great energy provinces."

Roche said the Premier's announcement of a Gas Commissioner would be welcomed by gas producers and users.

"QRC looks forward to working with the government on implementation of this policy," he said.

"Our focus will be to ensure that the analysis of gas supply and demand by the Commissioner is an open and transparent process for gas producers, gas users and the wider community."
