Australian company commercialises new coal technology

CSIRO has joined with Joy Australasia to commercialise new mining automation technology for underground coal mining.

As part of an agreement, Joy Australiasia has been awarded a non-exclusive license for the global commercialisation of CSIRO’s underground longwall automation system, known as LASC technology.

According to CSIRO, the technology locates and guides coal cutting equipment in longwall mines to improve productivity and remove people from hazardous working environments.

Pre-commercial prototypes of the technology have been operating at three Australian mines, which have posted positive results.

According to the company, key components of the automation system include face alignment, horizon control, communications and operator interface, and information systems.

Joy Australisia says the technology supports the industry vision of improved safety, productivity and reliability at the lowest cost per tonne.
