Aussie equipment supplier shakes hands with CSIRO

AN Australian longwall equipment supplier has landed a contract to access automation technology developed by CSIRO.

Inbye Mining Services will access the newly developed equipment, said to increase productivity and provide a safer working environment in coal mines.

Underground longwall coal mining involves large machines that move back and forth to cut into coal faces. According to CSIRO, automating some of the processes involved ultimately increases productivity and removes miners from noisy, dusty and hazardous areas.

The principal components of the technology, known as LASC Longwall Automation, include face alignment, horizon control, communications and operator interface, and information systems.

CSIRO development director, Tim McLennan, says the technology positions the Australian coal industry for the future by increasing overall competitiveness.

Pre-commercial prototypes of the technology have been operating at three Australian mines, with the product to be officially launched at a later date.
